Skincare in your fifties and sixties
The routine that suited you at thirty is usually the wrong one now, and the reason is not that skin needs more done to it. It is that it needs different things and, mostly, less.
What has actually changed
Skin holds less water than it used to and loses it faster, so it feels tight sooner in the evening and looks flatter in the morning. The surface is thinner and quicker to be irritated. Both of those point the same way: gentler, and more moisture kept in.
The thing to stop first
Foaming cleansers that leave your face squeaking, and any exfoliant used more than occasionally. That squeak is the surface stripped, and stripped skin looks duller and feels tighter, which is the exact complaint the routine was meant to fix.
What is worth adding
One product that puts water into the surface and holds it there, used at the same point every day. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are the ordinary, well understood ingredients for that, and they do not need a complicated routine built around them.
Sunscreen does not become optional
It is common to quietly drop it once the beach years are over. Everyday light through a car window and across a garden is still the largest single thing changing how your skin looks, so it stays in the routine.
Why short routines win here
A three step routine done every night beats a nine step routine done when you remember. Consistency is what makes any of this visible, and a short routine is the one that survives a late night, a cold bathroom and a busy week.
