Nine reasons your skin feels tight by the end of the day
Skin that feels fine in the morning and tight by evening is not a mystery, and it is almost never a sign of anything serious. It is usually two or three of the following stacked on top of each other.
The cleanser you used at breakfast
If your face squeaked at eight in the morning, it will be tight by five. That squeak is a stripped surface, and everything you put on afterwards is spending its day catching up. This is the most common single cause and the easiest to change.
The office, or the lounge, or the car
Air conditioning and heat pumps both dry a room out, and skin sitting in that air all day loses water the whole time. If your face feels better the moment you step outside, that is the room and not your skin.
Hot showers
Hot water takes the oils off the surface and skin feels tight within minutes of getting out. It is a small change to run it cooler and the difference shows up the same day.
Nothing holding the water in
A hydrating serum with nothing over the top loses most of its work by lunchtime. Humectants hold water at the surface, something slightly richer on top slows it leaving. Doing only the first half is the most common reason a serum seems to do nothing.
Applying to a bone dry face
A humectant pulls water from whatever is closest. Put it on damp skin and that is the water on your face. Put it on dry skin in a dry room and it can work the wrong way. Pat rather than towel, and apply while still slightly damp.
Wind, especially here
A walk to the car in a Wellington southerly does more drying than an hour indoors. It is the least controllable one on the list, which is a reason to have the routine right rather than a reason to give up.
Exfoliating this week
A scrub or an acid used in the last few days leaves a surface that holds water badly for a while afterwards. If tightness followed an exfoliation, that is the cause and the answer is to stop rather than to buy something.
Not enough water in you
A smaller effect than the internet suggests, and a real one at the bottom end. If you have had two coffees and nothing else since morning, that is a contributor.
The season
Skin that behaves in February and misbehaves in July is normal, and a routine can be seasonal. Adding a step for winter and dropping it in summer is a sensible thing to do rather than an inconsistency.
