Flaky Skin in a New Zealand Winter: Heat Pumps, Wind and the Fix
Heat pumps dry the air, southerlies dry the face, and skin that was fine in March is flaking by July. What is happening and a winter routine that works.
What it looks like
Dry flakes around the nose, brows and jaw. A tight, sometimes itchy feel. Redness across the cheeks after the wind. Moisturiser that seems to disappear.
What tends to be behind the look
Heated indoor air is very dry and pulls water out of skin all day. Cold wind does the same outside. Hot showers strip the surface oils that would slow it down.
What helps the look
Cooler, shorter showers. A richer cream than you use in summer, on damp skin. A humidifier or a bowl of water near the heat pump. Hydrating serum under the cream at night. A scarf.
What does not
Exfoliating the flakes away every day, which makes more. Face wipes. Alcohol based toners.
Where a PDRN roller serum fits
In winter the roller matters because it puts the serum on evenly over flaky patches that would otherwise be missed, and it goes on damp skin straight after the shower, when the surface is ready to hold water. Cream on top within the minute seals it against the heat pump overnight.
A routine that takes a minute
- Shower warm not hot, cleanse gently, pat damp.
- Roll the serum on damp skin, face and neck.
- A rich cream straight over, more than feels necessary.
- Humidifier on, scarf tomorrow.
Where Silka fits
Silka is a PDRN serum with a microneedle roller head on the bottle, made and shipped from New Zealand. The roller is the most practical way we know to put PDRN on every night: the head spreads the serum evenly across face and neck, nothing is left behind in your palm, and the whole routine takes about a minute, which is the part that makes a habit last.
