Anti ageing skincare in New Zealand

Most anti ageing advice online is written for somewhere else. Two things about New Zealand change what actually matters here, and both are worth knowing before you spend anything.

The light here is harsher

New Zealand sits under a thinner ozone layer with very clean air, and the sun gets through harder than the same latitude does elsewhere. Anything you read about ageing skin and sun applies here with the volume turned up. Daily sunscreen is not a nice extra in this country, it is the whole first step.

Dry indoor air does the rest

Heat pumps and wood burners pull the moisture out of a room through winter, and skin that has been sitting in that air all evening looks flat and feels tight. A lot of what gets read as skin ageing over a winter is skin that has been dried out since May.

What an anti ageing routine here looks like

Sunscreen every morning. A cleanser that does not leave your face squeaking. Something that puts water back into the surface and holds it there, used nightly. That is the routine, and everything past it is refinement rather than foundation.

Judging a product page

Read the ingredient list before the headline. Five things you can read out loud is a better sign than thirty you cannot. Check whether the promises are about how skin looks or about changing your skin, and check whether any number has been attached to the outcome. See the guide on what anti wrinkle can honestly mean for the short version of that test.

Buying locally

Something shipped from within New Zealand arrives in days rather than weeks, and a return goes to a local address instead of an offshore one. That matters more than it sounds when you are trying something for the first time and want the option of sending it back.
