It happens faster than you expect
Most skin change is slow enough that you notice it in photographs rather than mirrors. This one is often noticed in real time, over months, which is unsettling partly because nobody warns you it can move at that speed.
Dryness arrives first
Skin holds less water and loses it faster, so the first sign is usually a face that feels tight by evening and looks flat in the morning. A routine that worked for twenty years can stop suiting you inside a season, and that is a change in your skin rather than a failure of the products.
Everything reads as more tired
Skin short of water looks duller and catches light unevenly, so the same face in the same light reads as more tired than it did. A lot of what gets described as suddenly looking older is this, and it is the part most responsive to attention.
Fine lines become more visible than they were
They sit in a surface that is less full, so they catch more shadow. The line has not necessarily deepened, it is showing more. This is why the same lines can look softer again on a well hydrated morning.
Skin gets touchier
Products you have used for years can start to sting or leave redness. The move is towards simpler and gentler, not stronger, and this is the point where a lot of people go the wrong way and add an acid.
The old routine now overdoes it
Foaming cleansers and regular exfoliation on skin that is already short of water make everything above worse. If one thing comes off the list, make it the scrub.
Some of it is not skincare
Sleep, and everything that interferes with it, shows in skin before it shows anywhere else. That part is worth raising with your doctor rather than solving from a bathroom shelf, and no serum on the market is an answer to it.
